A common tip that people receive when they try to learn anything fast is that it takes 10,000 hours to master something.
This tip is actually based on the work of Dr. K. Anders Ericsson.
What Anders was talking about was ultra-competitive, easily ranked performance fields.
Nowhere, in fact, did he mention a requirement of 10,000 hours to learn everyday things.
A Different Theory on Learning
Author Josh Kaufman shared this insight in response to Ericcson’s work.
According to Kaufman’s findings it takes more like 20 hours of deliberate practice to learn something.
That’s significantly less time than the 10,000 hours many people suggest.
While 20 hours is likely not enough time to make us the world’s best, it’s enough to make significant progress and determine whether something is worth pursuing in the long term.
The 5 Steps to Learn Anything Fast
First, decide exactly what you want to do clearly and completely.
Second, break the action required down to sub-skills and practice the most important ones with self-correction.
Third, research the most important sub-skills. This information may come from books, articles, people, etc. Pay particular attention to the items that occur most frequently.
Fourth, remove the barriers to practice. If you want to learn to play the guitar keep it near your favorite spot rather than on a high shelf in the garage.
Lastly, pre-commit at least 20 hours.
The Need for Coaching in the 5 Steps
One thing to note is that despite the fact that we can practice alone, everyone should consider a coach.
A coach helps us avoid things like multitasking during practice sessions, for example.
Instead of wasting time referring to a source, a coach provides instant guidance and feedback.
Another thing, a coach helps avoid procrastination. This is key since, according to Kaufman, the ideal session should last about 40 minutes.
